Whereas average wages in the public sector grew faster than private wages between 2015 and 2021, the opposite has been true since. Private sector wages did not keep up with increases in consumer prices between 2016 and late 2021, while it was 2020’s COVID-19 pandemic that marked the start of real wage declines in the public sector.
